Who Is Paul Langan ?

Paul Langan Is an African American Author. He published such books as The Bully, The Gun, Summer of Secrets, Brothers in Arms, Payback, and Blood Is Thicker, all of which reflect his personal experiences like growing up without a father and challenges students face in school.

Who is Anne Schraffe?

Anne Schraffe is the co-author of the Bluford series. She wrote Lost and Found, A Matter of Trust, Until We Meet Again, Secret In The Shadows, The Bully, and Someone to love.

Teen Problems

Throughout the Bluford Series, the authors deal with numerous teen problems like abandonment, running away, domestic abuse, taking care of the elderly, peer pressure, stuttering, and bullying.

Parental Abandonment: In Lost and Found, Darcy and Jamee's father abandoned them. Today this is an unfortunately common problem; which can lead to low self-esteem, behavior problems, and even some suicide.Run AwaysIn Lost and Found, Jamee ran away from home because all of the pressures of breaking up with Bobby and dad coming back came crashing down upon her. Unfortunately, this is a common predicament, usually caused by parental abandonment, economic problems, and domestic abuse. For more information on runaways visit http//www.1800runaway.org/

Domestic Abuse: In Lost and Found; Jamee's boyfriend, Bobby Wallace, struck her after she broke up with him. Yet again, this is a common problem today. Nowadays, most young girls think that it is acceptable to be abused by her spouse/boyfriend when it's not.

Elderly Caretakers: In the first three books, Jamee and Darcy were obligated to take care of their grandmother. This is a predicament that affects not only your social life, but your mental health. Some children are forced to take care of their grandparents at an early age, sometimes before they can take care of themselves. An alternative would be a nursing home, but nursing homes are a serious risk. With nursing home abuse being the highest ever reported. Most families are reluctant to seek care from them so the grandparents move in with the family and their kids. This later develops financial problems and the adults are too busy to look after their own parents, so kids are forced to care for their grandparents at a far too early age when they themselves need to be taken care of.For more information on nursing home abuse

Stuttering: In A Matter of Trust, Hakeem was constantly teased by Roylin for stuttering. Most people who stutter often have self-esteem issues, think they are stupid, or are often frustrated; when they actually are the same as every one else.

Bullying: In A Matter of Trust, Hakeem is often teased and bullied throughout the entire book. They later find out that Roylin himself was hit as a child and is only taking his frustration out on Hakeem. Most people who bully are often in the same situation, they often feel abandoned or, physically scarred, or emotionally scarred and bullying is the only way they know how to vent their feelings.

To make a long story short, the Bluford Series deals with teen problems that have strong ties to and are often caused or contributed to by parents.

Until We Meet Again

Until We Meet Again is the third book in the Bluford Series. It focuses on Darcy's Relationship with Hakeem, Hakeem moving to Detroit, Her Grandmother's death, and introduces Brian Mason.

The story starts by revealing that Darcy's parents are getting back together, in spite of the huge fight they had in the previous book. Then, Darcy's old friend, Lissele Mason, asks her to babysit for her while she goes to school. There she's re-introduced to Lissele's brother, Brian; who is instantly attracted to Darcy and the feeling is mutual.
Later Hakeem, whose father has cancer, has to move away to Detroit to get a job with his uncle. Decidedly, Hakeem breaks up with Darcy to make it easier to move.
Almost immediately after they break up, Brian Mason sees Darcy and offers to make a date with Darcy, she reluctantly accepts. While she was out on a date with Brian Mason, Darcy's grandmother falls and needs to be hospitalized ,Darcy blames herself for the accident.

After a few "more than subtle dates," Brian invites her to his apartment alone, but Darcy's family was having dinner that night, so she lied and said she had to babysit. After Brian and Darcy talk a bit, Brian starts massaging Darcy and starts getting rough, Brian then forces himself on Darcy. She begged him to stop but Brian didn't, before things got out of hand, Dad; still thinking she's babysitting for Lissele, hears the struggle inside and controls the situation. When Darcy and Dad get home Dad is so furious he doesn't even want to look at her. He later tells Darcy's mother who is so mad, she grounds Darcy for a month. Darcy goes to her room and thinks about her situation but can't sleep.
Later, she goes into Grandma's room and talks to Grandma about everything that was bothering her. After crying in Grandmas lap she notices Mom standing in the doorway where they both let out how they feel. The next morning, Darcy awakes to the frantic sound of her mother's voice. Darcy, already knowing what happened, goes into Grandma's room to discover she had passed away. An eerie silence covers the room, except for the occasional sob.
After an undisclosed amount of time the family has the funeral. There Tarah, Cooper, and even Brisana; who Darcy realizes was right about Brian. After the funeral, Darcy is surprised to see her ex-boyfriend,Hakeem, who earlier moved to Detroit.

A Matter of Trust

A Matter of Trust is the second book in the Bluford Series. It takes place three months after the events of Lost & Found. The story further explores Hakeem and Darcy's relationship, explains how Brisana felt about Darcy's new friends, and introduces Roylin Bailey.

The story starts at Bluford High where we discover that Hakeem is very shy and stutters, it also reveals Roylin's character as a bully, because he constantly ridicules Hakeem's stutter.
Darcy, who we found out is in a more intimate relationship with Hakeem, notices Brisana is trying to steal Hakeem from her.

Later, Tarah had a birthday party and invites all of her friends excluding Roylin and the group of troubled kids. When they get to the party, Roylin shows up uninvited and starts teasing Hakeem's stutter. Hakeem then steps out of his character and is then blinded by rage and strikes Roylin. With everyone distracted they didn't notice a car pulling up. the miscreants then proceeded to opening fire on the gathering and a stray bullet grazed Roylin.
After Hakeem and Darcy visit Roylin in the hospital and find out he's going to live, Darcy finds out that Roylin is a bully because his father constantly beat him as a child.

The next day, Darcy confronted Brisana, Brisana then proceeds to admitting she still wanted to be friends with Brisana. Tarah then convinces Darcy to try to mend Their relationship.
The story then ends with Darcy walking in on her parents having a tremendous spat.

Who Is Guion S. Bluford ?

In the Bluford series an interesting question arose. In Lost and Found, Tarah asked who the school was named after, Darcy explained that it was named after an African American Astronaut named Guion Bluford.

To elaborate, Bluford was the first African American in space. He was a pilot on the Space Shuttle Challenger, on the 1983 mission STS-8, a mission to deploy the INSAT-1B satellite for India. He was born in Philadelphia on November 22,1942 and graduated from Overbrook High.
He later received a bachelor of Science from Pennsylvania State, A Master of Science and a PH.d. from from the Air Force, all in Aerospace engineering.
Bluford trained in the Air Force and received his pilot wings there he flew 144 combat missions and several papers on computational fluid dynamics.
Today, Bluford is retired from his chosen profession at the age of 66. And is a life long member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and was inducted in the International Space Hall of Fame in 1997.

Lost & Found

Lost & Found is the first book in the Bluford series. It introduces the Main characters Darcy, Tarah, Jamee, Brisonna, Grandma, Mom, Dad, Cooper, and Hakeem. It also reveals that their dad abandoned the family and came back,Jamee running away, and Darcy making friends with Tarah.

Darcy, who is the main protagonist, is paired for an assignment with Tarah. Who Darcy unbiasedly thinks is a low- life piece of trash. After an altercation at the beach, Darcy notices she is being stalked but her stalker is scared away by an approaching bus. Darcy Later spots the stalker at her school and at home where she calls the police. After an interrogation she founds out that her stalker is actually her father.

Meanwhile, Darcy' sister Jamee is emotionally struggling from her father's reappearance, her relationship problems, and numerous other things that drove her to run away from home. While looking for her Darcy finds out that Tarah is a much better friend than she'd realized and with the help of her new friends and her dad they found Jamee.

Exhibition Of Student Works

The Exhibition of Student Works is a city wide project that was introduced to Memphis City Schools by our superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash. It was created to display students creativity and to display certain skills most students wouldn't be able to showcase in the confides of the class room.

The Mission Of The Exhibition:
Memphis City Schools is committed to creating a learning environment in which all students will develop and showcase their academic and creative talents.

With support from the community, parents, and teachers, students will plan, research, create, and display their products in an Exhibition of Student Work.

Creation of student projects for the exhibitions allows students to apply their knowledge/talents beyond the classroom and increase their achievement.

Vision

Memphis City Schools is committed to creating a learning environment in which all students have the opportunity to develop their academic and creative talents. To achieve this vision, each student will develop two projects to be showcased in a Fall and Spring Exhibition of Student Work at all Memphis City schools.

Although the Exibition is resticted, students are still expected to be creative. For instance: Students can act, sing, dance, draw, or anything else creative. In fact this very blog was created as our exhibition project.
This Blog was created for Mrs. Harmon's English II Spring Exhibition
